Logs are grabbed with the grapple. Once positioned at the desired length, the operator engages the chain (saw) and the log is cut. Then the logs are set down; the mini-loader moves, picks them up again and the log or logs are cut again. For longer wood, which fits most boilers, the logs only need to be cut twice.
